What is market capitalization?

Market capitalization (or 'market cap') is the total dollar value of an asset based on its current price and the total supply available. For a public company it's the share price multiplied by the number of shares outstanding. For a cryptocurrency it's the coin price multiplied by the circulating supply. For a commodity like gold it's the spot price multiplied by the estimated above-ground stock.

How is market cap calculated?

Market cap is the current market price of one unit of an asset multiplied by the total number of units in circulation. Market Cap = Price × Circulating Supply. For commodities and currencies the supply figure comes from proven reserves, above-ground stocks, or money-supply data depending on the asset class.

What is the largest asset by market cap?

Real estate is consistently the largest single asset class by market capitalization globally, valued in the hundreds of trillions of dollars. Oil and the US dollar (by M2 money supply) are also among the largest. The AssetMarketCap homepage shows the live ranking updated continuously across stocks, crypto, commodities, and currencies.

What is the difference between market cap and enterprise value?

Market cap is the equity value only — price multiplied by shares outstanding. Enterprise value adds total debt and subtracts cash and equivalents, giving a fuller picture of what an acquirer would pay to buy the whole company. Market cap is the standard metric for ranking and comparing assets across classes; enterprise value is more useful for valuation analysis of individual companies.

How is market cap calculated for commodities like gold or oil?

For precious metals (gold, silver, platinum) the supply figure is the above-ground stock — the total mass mined throughout history, sourced from industry bodies such as the World Gold Council and the Silver Institute. For oil and gas, proven reserves from sources like the BP Statistical Review are used. The current spot price is multiplied by this supply estimate to give a comparable market cap.

How is market cap calculated for currencies in Forex?

Currency market cap uses M2 money supply — broad money including physical cash, demand deposits, and near-money instruments. Each country's M2 figure (sourced from central bank data and aggregators like TradingEconomics) is converted to USD using the prevailing exchange rate, allowing currencies to be ranked on the same scale as gold, equities, and cryptocurrencies.

Is cryptocurrency market cap calculated the same way as stocks?

Yes — the formula is identical: current price multiplied by circulating supply. For Bitcoin that's the BTC/USD price times the number of BTC mined to date. The main difference is that crypto supply is often capped (e.g. 21 million BTC) and verifiable on-chain, whereas stock 'shares outstanding' can change through buybacks, splits, or new issuance.

Why does ranking assets by market cap matter?

Market cap gives a consistent, cross-asset way to compare the size and importance of stores of value. Ranking gold, Bitcoin, Apple, and the US dollar on the same scale reveals where capital sits globally, how it shifts between asset classes over time, and which assets are gaining or losing share — useful for macro analysis, portfolio context, and long-term capital allocation.

How Do We Calculate Market Cap?

Market capitalisation is the total market value of an asset. The exact formula depends on the asset class, but the idea is always the same — price multiplied by the quantity in circulation:

Companies (stocks): share price × shares outstanding.
Cryptocurrencies: coin price × circulating supply.
Commodities & precious metals: spot price × estimated above-ground or available supply.
Currencies: the value of the money supply in circulation.
Real estate: the estimated aggregate value of the underlying property market.

How Are Asset Prices Determined?

We aggregate prices from many reputable exchanges, market data providers and public sources, then convert everything into your selected display currency so that every asset is directly comparable. Where multiple venues quote a price, we use representative pricing and filter out anomalous outliers so the figures you see are as fair and timely as possible.

What Is Market Capitalisation?

Market cap tells you how the market values an asset as a whole, rather than the price of a single unit — a $5 stock can easily be a bigger company than a $500 stock. It's a standardised yardstick investors rely on to gauge scale and to compare an asset against its peers. As a rough guide, assets are often grouped into tiers:

Mega- & large-cap — the established giants, typically valued in the hundreds of billions or trillions. Higher liquidity, lower relative risk.
Mid-cap — roughly $1bn–$10bn. More room to grow than the giants, but with greater volatility.
Small-cap — under $1bn. Often newer projects or companies with the highest growth potential and the highest risk.

Which tier suits you depends on your appetite for risk. Market cap is an important lens, but it's only one of many factors worth considering.

How Are Assets Ranked and Listed?

The leaderboard above is ordered by market cap — an accurate, real-time measure of each asset's overall valuation. Because we aggregate across markets rather than mirroring a single exchange, the rankings reflect the broad market rather than one venue's view.
