Binance weighs stock access in markets including Hong Kong and South Korea, says co-CEO Richard Teng

As the landscape of trading and investment continues to evolve, Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, is setting its sights on an ambitious expansion into stock trading. Co-CEO Richard Teng recently disclosed plans to offer exposure to stocks from various markets, including Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, and Brazil, during the TOKEN2049 conference held in Singapore. This strategic pivot reflects a growing trend among cryptocurrency platforms to diversify their offerings in response to shifting market dynamics.

The Motivation Behind the Move

Teng emphasized the importance of adapting to user preferences, stating, “A lot of our users say: ‘Hey, I want to have exposure to, let’s say, the top 10 Hong Kong stocks, top 10 Korean counters, top 10 Taiwanese, Brazilian counters.’ We’re looking at what our users demand and giving them that.” This user-centric approach is particularly relevant given the current challenges facing the cryptocurrency market, where prices for major digital assets remain significantly below their all-time highs.

The decision to expand into traditional stock markets is a response to the crypto market slump, where platforms like Coinbase reported substantial losses, including a net loss of $359.5 million in Q2 2026. Such figures underscore a pressing need for cryptocurrency exchanges to innovate and diversify their product offerings to maintain competitiveness and user engagement.

A Shift from Digital Assets to Traditional Stocks

Binance’s foray into stock trading is not entirely new. The exchange began offering trading in tokenized U.S. stocks and commodity derivatives in 2026, expanding its portfolio to include pre-IPO perpetual futures contracts. These developments allow users to speculate on the valuations of private companies, providing them with new avenues for trading and investment.

The trend of cryptocurrency exchanges moving into the realm of traditional finance is gaining traction. For instance, Coinbase also ventured into stock trading, launching traditional stock trading, perpetual futures, and prediction markets on its platform in December as part of its ambition to become an “everything exchange.” Additionally, OKX announced plans to offer tokenized shares in U.S. companies in partnership with the Intercontinental Exchange, further highlighting the competitive landscape.

Broader Implications for Financial Access

One of the most significant implications of Binance’s stock trading ambitions is the potential to democratize access to global markets. Teng pointed out that many people are constrained by their geographical location, particularly those in emerging markets across Africa and Latin America, where access to U.S. stocks can be limited. By tokenizing U.S. stocks, Binance aims to provide these individuals with opportunities to engage with companies they previously could not access.

According to a 2025 World Bank report, approximately 1.3 billion adults worldwide still lack access to a formal bank account, highlighting the critical need for alternative financial solutions. In this context, Binance operates as a “shadow bank,” allowing users to save, generate yield, and make cross-border payments while also opening doors to global stock markets with lower entry barriers.

The Role of AI in Trading

In addition to diversifying its offerings, Binance is also embracing emerging technologies to enhance user experience. Later this month, the platform plans to launch Binance AI Pro, an AI-powered crypto trading assistant designed to automate market analysis, strategy execution, and position management. Teng believes this shift towards AI-driven trading will redefine the nature of investing, making it more accessible and tailored to individual user needs.

“It has been a great leveler,” Teng stated, emphasizing how AI can help investors become more comfortable with setting parameters that guide their trading strategies. As the use of AI in financial markets grows, it has the potential to democratize access to trading tools that were once only available to institutional investors.

Navigating Regulatory Challenges

As Binance expands its offerings and embraces new technologies, it operates within a complex regulatory environment. Teng’s appointment as CEO in November 2023 followed a tumultuous period for the exchange, marked by scrutiny from regulatory authorities in the U.S. Binance faced significant legal challenges, including a $4.3 billion penalty and forfeitures, related to failing to register as a money-transmitting business and breaching sanctions laws. The founder, Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, also faced personal legal consequences, including a fine and a four-month prison sentence.

Teng’s background in traditional finance, having held roles at the Monetary Authority of Singapore and the Singapore Exchange, positions him uniquely to navigate these complexities. He advocates for a balanced approach to regulation that supports growth while mitigating risks. “It’s not only about looking at the risk dimension of the ecosystem, but also how you mitigate and manage it in order to support growth,” he explains.

The Need for Institutional Participation

A crucial aspect of Binance’s strategy involves attracting institutional investors who seek clarity and regulatory certainty. As Teng noted, “The first 3% of [crypto] adopters didn’t need certainty, and they didn’t want certainty. But for crypto to go mainstream, we need not just retail investors, but also sophisticated institutions that want clear rules and regulations they can operate within.”

This recognition of the need for regulatory frameworks reflects a broader trend in the cryptocurrency industry. As traditional financial institutions increasingly embrace digital assets, crypto platforms must adapt to clearer regulations to foster trust and participation from institutional players.

Conclusion: A New Era for Binance and Global Markets

Binance’s exploration of stock trading represents a significant step forward in the evolution of cryptocurrency exchanges. By offering access to traditional stock markets, the platform aims to empower users globally while addressing the challenges posed by a fluctuating crypto landscape. This expansion could pave the way for greater financial inclusion, particularly for individuals in emerging markets who have historically faced barriers to investment opportunities.

As the exchange navigates regulatory challenges and embraces innovative technologies like AI, its trajectory will likely influence the future of trading and investment. The path ahead will require careful balancing of risk management and growth facilitation, but if successful, Binance could redefine the landscape of global finance, making it more accessible for all.
